California Legislature Passes Historic Tobacco Controls to Save Lives, Protect Kids

The California Legislature approved two groundbreaking tobacco regulation bills that will save the lives of thousands of Californians: classifying e-cigarettes as tobacco products and raising the tobacco purchasing age to 21.

Coalition Files Initiative to Raise State’s Tobacco Tax

Save Lives California—a broad coalition of physicians, patients, taxpayers and health care workers—has filed an initiative with the Attorney General’s office that would increase California’s tax on cigarettes by $2 per pack. The San Francisco Medical Society and the California Medical Association are part of this coalition.

SFMS Champions Tobacco Regulation at August Lobby Day

On August 26, 2015, three SFMS physician members joined over a hundred health care workers, and patient advocates at a daylong rally at the Capitol in Sacramento in support of the six tobacco control bills heard during the Special Extraordinary Session on Healthcare 2015 convened by Governor Brown.
