Supreme Court Upholds ACA Subsidies

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld a key provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), reaffirming that 6.4 million people in 34 states can continue to receive subsidies to purchase health care insurance. In a 6-3 ruling, the nation’s highest court ruled that critics’ reading of Obamacare might make sense in isolation, but not when viewed in a larger context and in light of the intention of the law.

SFMS Applauds Governor Brown, California Legislature for Passage of SB 277

Today is a win for public health with the passage of SB 277 (Pan/Allen). On behalf of 1,600 San Francisco physicians and physicians-in-training, SFMS would like to recognize Senators Richard Pan and Ben Allen for their leadership in authoring this bill, Senator Mark Leno and Assemblymember David Chiu for co-authoring and championing the legislation, and the entire California State Legislature for sending it to Governor Brown.

CDC Panel Urges Expanding Pool of Young People Who Receive Meningitis B Shot

An advisory committee for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that all 16- to 23-year-olds to consider the vaccine. Previous guidance was limited to those at high risk of exposure to the disease, like lab workers and students at colleges with outbreaks.
