Zika Guidance for San Francisco Physicians, Including Specimen Submission Instructions

Health officials confirmed Zika virus has reached Northern California after a resident of Yolo County tested positive for the virus. The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) has provided detailed instructions for specimen submission for Zika virus testing.

For asymptomatic pregnant patients returning from a Zika-affected country, testing may be offered with specimen collection 2 to 12 weeks post return. Specimens may be directly submitted to the California Department of Public Health laboratory per the above linked instructions with appropriate notification made to the SFDPH Communicable Disease Control Unit.

Providers are asked to continue to contact the SFDPH Communicable Disease Control and Prevention (415) 554-2830 for testing requests for symptomatic patients.

Zika test results take about 2 weeks to come back.

Please note that Patient Information Fact Sheets are also available on the CDPH site, in English and Spanish versions.
