Urge your legislator to vote for the Bipartisan Background Checks Act (H.R. 8) Today!

This week Congress is expected to vote on H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019. This bipartisan legislation would help reduce gun violence in this country by ensuring those who are not legally permitted to purchase firearms are not able to do so.

A recent Quinnipiac Poll found that 97 percent of all Americans, including 97 percent of all gun owners support subjecting all gun purchases to a background check.

Background checks work - the Department of Justice has reported that between 1994 and 2015, 3 million individual applications were denied because of the background check requirement. That means 3 million potentially dangerous individuals were denied access to a firearm through the federal background check process.

However, loopholes still exist - background checks are currently only required for purchases from federally licensed firearms dealers. There are no such requirements for purchases from gun-shows, over the internet or through private sales. H.R. 8 would take a common-sense approach to close these loopholes and institute a federal requirement for background checks for all gun sales.

The time to act is now – please call your Representative using the grassroots hotline at (800) 833-6354 and urge them to support H.R. 8 today!
