Why are you a SFMS member?

Being a new physician in San Francisco I joined the SFMS to connect with physicians and to become involved with local health policy.

Which SFMS member resource is most helpful to you?

Some of the marketing tools and events through SFMS have really helped me get my practice up and running.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I am an outdoorsman at heart…in my former life I was a fly-fishing guide and instructor in Chile and in the Sierras. I enjoy fly-fishing, skiing, hiking, traveling and I am a sports fanatic…especially when it comes to the Chicago Cubs.

What is the most important thing you learned in medical school or residency?

While I have certainly devoted my life to medicine I have also learned that a work-life balance is very valuable.

What are some of the biggest opportunities or challenges you see in health care within the next five year?

Providing state of the art and evidence-based care in a cost-effective manner.

What do you love most about practicing urology?

In Urology I really love the mix of surgery and medicine along with the aspect of continuity of care. In the Urological world the variety of pathology and treatments is tremendous. Furthermore, I sought out a specialty in which a sense of humor is a paramount attribute…especially given the inherent anatomy of the specialty. Urology is also specialty on the forefront of the technology boom in medicine and surgery…the da Vinci Robot is a perfect example.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given throughout your career so far?

I’ve learned that a team approach to caring for your patients is vital to your success.

Who is your favorite music artist/band?

Mumford & Sons

What is your favorite restaurant in San Francisco?

The House of Prime Rib

If you weren't a physician, what profession would you like to try?

History Professor
