SFMMS Gathers Vaccine Guidance & Resources from National Medical Organizations September 10, 2025 SFMMS 0 California is endorsing COVID-19 vaccine recommendations from national medical professional organizations rather than federal health officials. State public health departments typically adopt vaccine recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which takes their cues from a scientific advisory panel composed of experts who specialize in vaccines and infectious diseases. However, the last several months have been marked by unprecedented, troubling and at times confusing restrictions to COVID vaccine access. The CDC and U.S. Food and Drug Administration have significantly narrowed who can or should get a COVID vaccine — most notably, saying that healthy children, pregnant people and healthy adults don’t need to get immunized. As a result, states are stepping in to provide their own guidance on who should get vaccinated, and relying on medical professional organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Additionally, California, Oregon, Washington, and now, Hawaii have formed the West Coast Health Alliance to make regional vaccine recommendations to its residents and insurers. SFMMS anticipates more resources to come from the West Coast Health Alliance in the coming days and weeks. You can find guidelines from those national specialty societies linked below.
