CMA Seeks Physician Volunteers to Provide Remote Support to Health Care Workers Serving on the Front Lines of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The California Medical Association’s (CMA) Wellness Program is seeking volunteer physicians to serve as remote peer care coaches to assist physicians, nurses and health care workers serving on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new program, called Care 4 Caregivers, will offer virtual emotional and professional support from physicians to health care workers serving patients during the COVID-19 crisis.

“We have been flooded with queries from practicing and retired physicians about how they can support colleagues during these unprecedented times,” said Dave Logan, Ph.D., CEO of CMA’s Wellness Program. “Care 4 Caregivers provides physicians a virtual opportunity to lend their expertise to guide health care workers through this crisis.”

Coaching services will be conducted remotely and are not considered practicing medicine, so a current license is not necessary. In particular, CMA is encouraging retired physicians (who may be at higher risk of COVID-19 exposure and thus, unable to work at a health care facility) to volunteer.

All interested physician volunteers should have:

  • Four hours of time available for online training
  • Access to computer audio and video and sufficient broadband (CMA will supply a Zoom account)
  • Passion for supporting fellow health care providers
  • Compassion, empathy and patience
  • Strong listening skills

To volunteer for Care 4 Caregivers, please email your name and mobile phone number to cmawellness@cmadocs.org.
