Blue Shield Exiting Healthy Families Program on October 1

Effective October 1, 2012, Blue Shield of California will no longer provide coverage for over 31,000 Healthy Families patients in California. Physicians who treat Blue Shield Healthy Families patients are encouraged to verify coverage with the patients' new health plans prior to providing care after October 1, to ensure payment for services rendered. Physicians who provide out-of-network care are at risk of not being paid.

Patients were notified in July that the Blue Shield plan will no longer be available and were given an opportunity to select a new plan by August 31. Patients who did not select a plan by the deadline, were automatically transferred to the default "community provider plan" (CPP) for their county. Patients have until October 31, to switch to another plan if they are dissatisfied with the CPP to which they were assigned.
