2016 Local and State Election Results

There were some big wins for health care and public health in the 2016 election.  Every ballot measure that SFMS endorsed or opposed was successful.

San Francisco Measure

Measure VTaxes sugary beverages at 1 cent per ounce.  SFMS supported this measure as it did last time a sugar tax was on the ballot. This time it passed with 62% of the vote.  SFMS leaders, particularly Dr. John Maa, worked hard to pass the measure.

State Initiatives

Prop 52 – Medi-Cal Matching Funds Hospital Fee Program.  SFMS supported and it passed with about 70% of the vote.

Prop 55 – Tax Extension for Fund Education and Healthcare.  SFMS supported and it passed with 62% of the vote.

Prop 56 –  Tobacco Tax for Health Care Programs, Smoking Prevention and Research.  SFMS supported and CMA made a big push with a statewide coalition. It passed with 63% of the vote.

Prop 60 – Adult Film Condoms.  SFMS opposed this measure along with major AIDS and LGBT organizations.  It was defeated by 54% of the vote.

Prop 61 – State Prescription Drug Purchases.  CMA opposed this measure claiming it was poorly crafted.  SFMS decided to stay neutral.  It was defeated by 54% of the vote.

Prop 63 – Firearms, Ammunition Sales.  SFMS supported this measure and it passed with 63% of the vote.

Prop 64 – Marijuana Legalization.  SFMS decided not to take a position on this.  It passed with 56% of the vote.
