CMS announces additional opportunities to join innovative care approaches under QPP

CMS announced new opportunities for clinicians to join Advanced Alternative Payment Models (APMs) developed by the CMS Innovation Center to improve care and potentially earn an incentive payment under the Quality Payment Program created through MACRA.

Physicians Must Post Nondiscrimination Statements by October 19

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Civil Rights recently finalized new nondiscrimination rules intended to advance health equity and reduce health care disparities. Under the rule, individuals are protected from discrimination in health care on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability and sex, including discrimination based on pregnancy, gender identity and sex stereotyping. It also includes important protections for individuals with disabilities and enhances language assistance for people with limited English proficiency.

CMS Makes Major MACRA Implementation Announcement

Andrew Slavitt, Acting Administrator of CMS, announced CMS heard concerns expressed by the AMA and other physician organizations about the proposed start date for performance reporting by physicians under the new payment systems created by the MACRA. CMS announced that the final MACRA regulation will exempt physicians from any risk of penalties if they choose one of three distinct MIPS reporting options in 2017, in addition to the option of participating in an advanced APM.

Seamless Conversion to Medicare Advantage

Some questions have been raised about recent press coverage on plans enrolling new Medicare beneficiaries in Medicare Advantage without the beneficiary’s knowledge. The American Medical Association (AMA) raised concerns and a number of questions with senior officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
