Hepatitis A Outbreaks in California Immunization recommended for Californians who are homeless or using drugs

On July 13, 2017, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a health advisory regarding outbreaks of hepatitis A among persons who are homeless or using illicit drugs and individuals working with these persons.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved prescribing information for eculizumab includes a black box warning for increased risk of meningococcal disease, and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends meningococcal vaccination for all patients receiving eculizumab. Recent data show that some patients receiving eculizumab who were vaccinated with the recommended meningococcal vaccines still developed meningococcal disease, most often from nongroupable Neisseria meningitidis, which rarely causes invasive disease in healthy individuals.

Update on Senate Health Reform Bill and AMA Polling Results

The American Medical Association(AMA) released the results of seven public opinion polls of registered voters in states that will be pivotal in determining the outcome of pending health reform legislation in the Senate (Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Nevada, Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia). Six of the seven polls were conducted by Public Opinion Strategies, which is the firm that conducts polls for the Wall Street Journal and NBC News. The West Virginia poll was conducted by Jan van Lohuizen.
